Luke the physician wrote how Peter told the people who gathered together after the lame man at the temple was healed to, “Repent you therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you. Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began”, and in chapter three and verse twenty-two of the book of Acts Luke shared how Peter told the people how Moses said, “A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren” where we read:
For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall you hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.
The verse begins, “For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me;” Luke began with the words, “For Moses truly said” which means “because, since and on account that Moses whose name means drawing out and was the legislator of the Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of the Jewish religion uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto the fathers” which means “to the male ancestors, forefathers and founders of the Jewish nation”, “a prophet shall the Lord your God” or “one who is moved by the Spirit of God and therefore his organs or spokesmen who solemnly declared to men what they received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation will the one to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah whom your, the people who gathered to Peter and John's, Heavenly Father God” “raise up unto you” which means “stand forth, arise and lift up in front and before you, people who gathered” “of your brethren” or “belonging to your, people who gathered's, ones of the same national ancestor, belonging to the same people or countryman”, “like unto me” which means “who is even so and in likeness to me, Moses”. Luke shared how “Peter” told the people who gathered to him that “Moses” spoke of the Messiah Jesus as he declared how God would lift up one of the Jewish brothers who would be a prophet like he was among them. (See Deuteronomy 18:15-18)
The verse continues, “him shall you hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.” Luke added the words, “him shall you hear” or “that person will you, Jewish people who gathered to Peter and John, be endowed with the faculty for hearing, perceiving, understanding and comprehending” “in all things” which means “in each, every, the whole and everything” “whatsoever he shall say unto you” or “whatever he, the sent Messiah, will utter, declare and proclaim to you Jewish people who gathered”. Luke shared how “Peter” told the people who gathered to him they would “perceive and understand” everything the “sent Messiah” would declare to them.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Peter” employed the example of “Moses” who prophesied concerning the Messiah as one of His proofs that Jesus came as he declared. “Moses” wrote how the Messiah would be one who was raised up among the “Jewish brethren”, and Jesus was born of the Jews. Jesus was the fulfillment of “Moses” words, and He gave the promise of forgiveness of sins and everlasting life to every person who puts their faith and trust in Him. Those who are wise will carefully examine the prophets of the Old Testament and their declarations concerning the Messiah, and when they discover Jesus is the promised Messiah, they should surrender their lives to Him.
Next time Luke shares how Peter tells how Moses said, “every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
