The physician Luke wrote how Peter told the people who gathered together after the lame man at the temple was healed, “Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall you hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people”, and in chapter three and verse twenty-four of the book of Acts Luke shared how “Peter” told the people how, “all the prophets … foretold of these days” where we read:
Yes, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after,
as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
The verse begins, “Yes, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, ...” Luke began with the words, “yes, and all the prophets from Samuel” which means “even so, also and indeed, each, every, the whole and everyone of the ones who were moved by the Spirit of God and therefore his organs or spokesmen who solemnly declared to men what they received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation from the time of Samuel whose name means “his name is of God” and was the son of Elkanah and Hannah, the last of the judges, a distinguished prophet, and a founder of the prophetic order, he gave the Jews there first kings, Saul and David” “and those that follow after” which means “and the prophets who were consecutive and subsequent to Samuel did the following”. Luke shared how “Peter” told the people who were gathered to him in the temple that each and every one of the “prophets” from “Samuel” and those who came after him did the following.
The verse continues, “... as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.” Luke added the words, “as many as have spoken” or “even like a great number and numerous other prophets who uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “have likewise foretold of these days” which means “have even so, also and in like manner announced beforehand or pre-announced pertaining to the times or time period in which Jesus the Messiah came”. Luke shared how “Peter” told the people who gathered to him that “many” other “prophets” of God had made declarations concerning the “days” of the Messiah Jesus.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn not only how “Moses” spoke of the Messiah's coming, but also “Samuel” and many other “prophets” of God. Jesus was sent by His Father God into the world to save people from their sins, and when they yield their lives to His Son Jesus, they will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with Him. God “foretold” all these things through His “prophets”, and anyone who carefully examines all the evidence concerning Jesus being the Messiah of God will discover God's plan of salvation through Him. Those who are wise will yield themselves to Jesus who is the prophesied Messiah and Christ of God who brought “salvation” to all mankind.
Next time Luke shares how Peter tells the multitude, “you are the children of the prophets”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
