The physician Luke wrote, “there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did. And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber. And forasmuch as Lydda was near to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them. Peter got up and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them”, and in chapter nine and verse forty of the book of Acts Luke shared how Peter, “put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed” where we read:
But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.
The verse begins, “But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise.” Luke began with the words, “but Peter put them all forth” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover Peter. whose name means a little rock or stone and was one of Jesus' disciples, cast, drove and sent out each of the other people from the room”, “and kneeled down” or “and bended upon his knees”, “and prayed” which means “and made orations, worshiped and interceded to God”; “and turning him toward the body” or “and turning toward the physical body of Dorcas” “said” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Tabitha” whose name means “female gazelle” “arise” which means “rise up and be raised from the dead”. Luke shared how “Peter” removed everyone from the room where “Dorcas'” body lie, knelt down and made orations to God. He “turned” toward “Dorcas'” body and told her to “rise from the dead”.
The verse continues, “And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.” Luke added the words, “and she opened her eyes” which means “and Dorcas opened up her physical eyes”:“and when she saw Peter” or “at at the time and moment Dorcas observed, notice and beheld Peter whose name means a little rock or stone”, “she sat up” which means “Dorcas raised herself to a sitting position”. Luke shared how “Dorcas” “opened” up her physical eyes, observed “Peter” and raised herself to a sitting position.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how this was a miracle indeed. God was demonstrating His power through “Peter” as He raised “Dorcas” from the dead. God loves people, and when a person yields themselves to His Son Jesus, He will forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and perform the greatest miracle of all – raising them from spiritual death to life eternal that will last forever and ever.
Next time Luke shares how Peter, “gave her his hand and lifted her up”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
