Brought According to Your Tribes - Joshua 7:14

In the book of Joshua, we learned concerning Israel how Jehovah God said, “Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus says the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of you, O Israel: you can not stand before your enemies, until you take away the accursed thing from among you”, and in chapter seven and verse fourteen of the book of Joshua, we learn how Jehovah God said, “In the morning therefore you shall be brought according to your tribes” where we read, 

In the morning therefore you shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD takes shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.

The verse reads, “In the morning therefore you shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD takes shall come according to the families thereof;” Joshua or the writer began this verse with the words, “in the morning therefore” or “wherefore, then and on this account within the early dawn or rising of the sun” “you shall be brought” which means “you, the people of Israel will be led and called upon” “according to your tribes” or “in keeping with your, the people of Israel’s, clans or groups”: “and it shall be” which means “and it, the following, shall exist”, “that the tribe” or “that the clan or group” “which the LORD takes” which means “that Jehovah who is the existing One and is the One True God captures, seizes and holds” “shall come” or “will approach, enter and be brought near” “according to the families thereof” which means “in keeping with the relatives and kinsmen within the tribe”. Jehovah God directed the people of Israel to be carried forward in keeping with their clans early in the morning, and the clan chosen by Him were to approach with their relatives and kinsmen.

 

The verse goes on to say, “and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “and the family” which means “and the clan of relatives” “which the LORD shall take” or “that Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God will capture, choose and seize” “shall come by households” which means “will approach and enter through the means of the people within their dwellings, habitations and abodes”; “and the household” or “and the people within their dwelling places, habitations and abodes” “which the LORD shall take” which means “that Jehovah who is the existing One and the One True God will capture, choose and seize” “shall come man by man” or “will arise and approach male human being by male human being”. Jehovah God said the clan of relatives who are chosen by Jehovah God were to approach Joshua by each of the people within their dwelling places or abodes, and from them were come were to approach each male human being by male human being.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God continued to be involved with the people of Israel, and because they were unaware of the person who violated the command not to lay hold of the “accursed thing”, God gave instructions to Joshua for narrowing the number of potential offenders. Each “tribe” of Israel was to present themselves.; then each “family” from that “tribe”; then each household and finally “man by man”. We shall see how God chooses the person who was at fault in our next few verses, but for now, let us consider how God is working intimately with the people of Israel. He loves Israel, and He loves us, and His desire is to have a personal intimate relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the grave after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and give us the wisdom to know how to narrow things according to His perfect will and purpose for our lives. 

Next time we learn how Jehovah God says, “he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
