In the book of Joshua, we learned concerning Israel how, “the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: … And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore have you at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan! O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turns their backs before their enemies! For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what will you do unto your great name?”, and in chapter seven and verse ten of the book of Joshua, we learn how, “the LORD said unto Joshua, Get you up” where we read,
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get you up; wherefore lie you thus upon your face?
The verse reads, “And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get you up;” Joshua or the writer said, “and the LORD” which means “and Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “said unto Joshua” or “uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked Joshua whose name means Jehovah is salvation”, “Get you up” which means “arise and stand up”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God told “Joshua” to stand up.
The verse goes on to say, “wherefore lie you thus upon your face?” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “wherefore lie you thus” which means “for what reason and cause do you therefore descend and prostrate yourself” “upon your face” or “on your, Joshua’s, front of the head or countenance”? Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God asked “Joshua” for the reason that he was prostrated upon his “face”.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how Jehovah God responded to the prayer of “Joshua” by first telling him to stand up, and then he asked him why he was lying prostrate upon his “face”. As though there was no reason for “Joshua” to be in that position, God confronted him and was going to reveal to him what was happening. God knew all the while about the hidden “accursed thing” which we shall discover in our next few verses, but for now He wanted “Joshua” to rise up and pay attention. God knows about our lives as well. He knows we have sin in our lives that leads to death, and for this reason He sent His Only Begotten Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to help us know when we are to “rise up” and pay attention to Him.
Next time we learn how Jehovah God says, “Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
