In the book of Joshua, we learned, “when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns passed on before the LORD, and blew with the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them”, and in chapter six and verse nine of the book of Joshua, we learn how, “the armed men went before the priests” where we read,
And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets,
and the rereward came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.
,
The verse reads, “And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the armed men” which means “and the male human beings who were equipped for battle and war” “went before the priests” or “proceeded and marched in advance and prior to the spiritual leaders, rulers and officials” “that blew with the trumpets” which means “who gave a blast or blow using the cornets”. Joshua or the writer shared how the “men” who were equipped for war proceeded in advance of the spiritual leaders who gave the blasts upon the cornets fashioned from the horns of a ram.
The verse continues, “… and the rereward came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.” Joshua added the words, “and the rereward” or “and the guard at the rear” “came after the ark” which means “proceeded and followed the box or chest”, “the priests going on” or “the spiritual leaders, rulers and officials walking, proceeding and moving forward”, “and blowing with the trumpets” which means “and giving a blast or blow using the cornets”. Joshua or the writer shared how the “rear guard” followed the “ark of the covenant” while the spiritual leaders were proceeding and giving a blast upon their cornets fashioned from ram’s horns.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn the order of the procession that was to encircle Jericho. The “seven priests” who were “blowing the ram’s horn cornets”, the warriors equipped for battle, the “ark of the covenant” and the rear guard were all present. The people were ready, and they would soon be led on their mission. God was with them, and that made them a formidable foe. God is with us as well, and when we align with His way of salvation through belief and trust in His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to lead and guide us to the truth and into our mission and responsibility before Him.
Next time we learn how, “Joshua commanded the people, saying, you shall not shout, nor make any noise”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
