In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priest took up the ark of the LORD. And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rereward came after the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days”, and in chapter six and verse fifteen of the book of Joshua, we learn how,“on the seventh day … they compassed the city … seven times” where we read,
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day,
and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.
The verse reads, “And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day,…” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and it came to pass” which means “and it happened and occurred” “on the seventh day” or “upon the seventh sunrise to sunset”, “that they rose early” which means “that they, the people of Israel, started, rose up and made a first and primary start” “about the dawning of the day” or “around the dawn or sunrise of the day”. Joshua or the writer shared how the people of Israel got up “early” in the “morning” on the “seventh day” and did the following.
The verse continues, “… and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.” Joshua added the words, “and compassed the city” or “and went around and encircled the dwelling place or town of Jericho” “after the same manner” which means “in a like and similar fashion” “seven times” or “upon seven different occasions” “only on that day” which means “however upon that sunrise to sunset” “they compassed the city” or “they, the people of Israel, went around and encircled the dwelling place or town of Jericho” “seven times” which means “upon seven occasions”. Joshua or the writer shared how the people of Israel marched around the city of Jericho all “seven days”, however, on the seventh day, they encircled the town of Jericho seven different “times”.
When we think though the words in this verse, we learn through Joshua or the writer how the people of Israel obeyed Jehovah God’s directive through Joshua to go around the “city of Jericho” once per day for six days, and then upon the seventh day, they were to encircle the city “seven times”. God was fulfilling His His plan to give the promise land to the people of Israel, and their part was to obey Him. God has a plan for our eternal life as well through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when He raised Him from the dead after three days, He made the way through trust and faith in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord” to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and equipped with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and give us the ability to keep and follow His ways which will bless Him and bless our lives as well.
Next time Joshua tells the people, “shout; for the LORD has given you the city”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
