In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD. And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD”, and in chapter six and verse eight of the book of Joshua, we learn what happened, “when Joshua had spoken unto the people” where we read,
And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people,
that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns passed on before the LORD,
and blew with the trumpets: an the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.
,
The verse reads, “And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and it came to pass” which means “and it happened and occurred”, “when Joshua had spoken” or “at the time and moment Joshua whose name means ‘Jehovah is salvation’ uttered, declared, proclaimed and made a command” “unto the people” which means “to the human beings who belonged to Israel” according to the following words. Joshua or the writer shared at the time and moment that “Joshua” made a declaration and command to the “people” of Israel, that the following happened.
The verse goes on to say, “… that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns passed on before the LORD, …” Joshua continued with the words, “that the seven priests” or “that the seven spiritual leaders, rulers and officials who were” “bearing the seven trumpets” which means “lifting up and carrying the seven cornets” “of rams’ horns” or “fashioned with the horns of a ram animal” “passed on before the LORD” which means “crossed, marched and traversed in front and in advance of Jehovah who is the existing One and is the proper name for the One True God”. Joshua or the writer shared how the “seven spiritual leaders” who were carrying the “seven cornets” fashioned from the horns of a ram marched and crossed in front of Jehovah God.
Finally the verse says, “and blew with the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.” Joshua or the writer concluded this verse with the words, “and blew with the trumpets:” which means “and gave a blast or blow using the cornets”: “and the ark of the covenant” or “and the box and chest pertaining to the alliance, treaty, pledge and agreement” “of the LORD” which means “belonging to Jehovah who is the exiting One and is the proper name for the One True God” “followed them” or “moved and proceeded after them, the seven priests with the trumpets”. Joshua or the writer ended this verse by sharing how the “seven priests” with the “trumpets” led the way around the city of Jericho while the “ark of the covenant” proceeded after them.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how the people of Israel began to follow the instructions of Jehovah God through Joshua with the “seven priests” carrying “seven trumpets” leading the way in the presence of Jehovah God. God’s “ark of the covenant” proceeded behind them, and the seizing of the promise land was underway. “Worship” through the “seven priests with trumpets” led them, and the presence of God represented through the “ark” was right behind them. In a similar manner, God desires to be among people and to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and show us the value of worship, His presence and following where He leads through His Holy Spirit.
Next time we learn how, “the armed men went before the priests”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
