So Did He Unto Them - Joshua 9:26

In the book of Joshua, we learned how the “men of Gibeah” told Joshua and the people of Israel, “now, behold, we are in you hand: as it seems good and right unto you to do unto us, do”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty-six of the book of Joshua, we learn, “so did he unto them” where we read,

And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel,

that they slew them not.

The verse reads, “And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and so did he unto them” which means “and thus and therefore did he, Joshua, to them, the men of Gibeah”, “and delivered them” or “and rescued and saved them, the men of Gibeah” “out of the hand” which means “from the power, might, strength and authority” “of the children” or “pertaining to the offspring and progeny” “of Israel” which means “belonging to Israel whose name means God prevails and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Joshua” rescued the “men of Gibeah” from the power and authority belonging to the offspring of Israel.

The verse continues, “… that they slew them not. Joshua or the writer added the words, “that they” which means “so they, the people of Israel” “slew them not” or “did not beat, hit or kill them, the men of Gibeah”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Joshua” prevented the people of Israel from beating and killing the “men of Gibeah”

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how “Joshua” not only defended the “men of Gibeah”, but he also rescued them. This is an interesting reaction by “Joshua” because the “men of Gibeah” lied to him, but he was so committed to the covenant that he made between Israel and the “men of Gibeah” that he saved them. God is committed to us, and because He loves us, He will “save” us from our sins which lead to death. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and He raised Him from the dead after three days so when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to assure us that He has given His life for us so He may save and rescue us for all eternity. (See John 16:13: 2 Corinthians 5:21)

Next time we learn how, “Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
