In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priest took up the ark of the LORD. And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rereward came after the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets”, and in chapter six and verse fourteen of the book of Joshua, we learn how, “the second day they compassed the city once” where we read,
And the second day they compassed the city once,
and returned into the camp: so they did six days.
The verse reads, “And the second day they compassed the city once, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the second day” which means “and the second sunrise to sunset” “they compassed the city” or “they, the people of Israel, went around and encircled the dwelling place and town of Jericho” “once” which means “one time”. Joshua or the writer shared how the people of Israel encircled the town of Jericho one time on the “second day”.
The verse goes on to say, “… and returned into the camp: so they did six days.” Joshua continued with the words, “and returned into the camp” or “and turned and went back to the encampment”: “so they did six days” which means “and in like kind they, the people of Israel, fashioned, accomplished and performed for six sunrises to sunsets”. Joshua or the writer shared how the people of Israel went back to their encampment after compassing the city of Jericho one time, and they did the same thing for “six days”.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how the people of Israel repeated their encircling of the “city of Jericho” one time on the “second day”, and afterward, they went back to their encampment. They performed this task for “six days” just as Jehovah God instructed through Joshua. God’s plan was being worked out, and step by step they were fulfilling the word of God. God desired to bless the people of Israel with the promise land, and when they followed His way, they were to be successful. God has a plan for our lives as well, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days, He made the way through faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord” to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and given His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and make us aware of His desire and plan for our lives. All we need to do is yield to Him and obey.
Next time Joshua or the writer says, “on the seventh day … they compassed the city … seven times”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
