The Ark of the LORD Compassed the City - Joshua 6:11

In the book of Joshua, we learned, Joshua had commanded the people, saying, you shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall you shout”, and in chapter six and verse eleven of the book of Joshua, we learn how, “the ark of the LORD compassed the city” where we read,

So the ark of the LORD compassed the city,

going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

,

The verse reads, So the ark of the LORD compassed the city, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “so the ark” which means “therefore, then and on this account the box or chest” “of the LORD”  or “belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “compassed the city” which means “went around and encircled the dwelling place and town of Jericho”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God’s “ark of the covenant” encircled the town of Jericho.

The verse continues, “… going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.” Joshua added the words, “going about it once” or “compassing and encircling it, the city of Jericho, one time”: “and they came into the camp” which means “and they, the people of Israel, went back, returned and entered the encampment”, “and lodged in the camp” or “and stopped over and passed the night within the encampment”. Joshua or the writer shared how the people of Israel encircled the town of Jericho one time and returned to their encampment and spent the night there.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how the people of Israel obeyed Jehovah God’s directive through Joshua to compass the “city of Jericho” one time on the first day. Afterward, they went back to their encampment and spent the night there. We shall see how they continue to obey God, and although it may have seemed that nothing happened by their efforts, God was at work. Sometimes there are a series of acts that are to be performed before we see the results God has promised, and when God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days, He made the way step by step for us to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and provided with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and lead us in keeping with His way of performing His will.

Next time we learn how, “Joshua rose early in the morning”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
