Seven Priest Before the Ark - Joshua 6:13

In the book of Joshua, we learned how, Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priest took up the ark of the LORD”, and in chapter six and verse thirteen of the book of Joshua, we learn how, “the seven priests bearing seven trumpets of ram’s horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually” where we read,

And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rereward came after the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.

The verse reads, And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and seven priests” which means “and the seven spiritual leaders, rulers and officials who were” “bearing seven trumpets”  or “lifting up and carrying seven cornets” “of rams’ horns” which means “fashioned from the horns of a ram animal” “before the ark” or “in advance and prior to the box or chest” “of the LORD” which means “belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “went on continually” or “departed, moved and proceeded forward recurrently and again”. Joshua or the writer shared how the “seven spiritual leaders” who were carrying the “seven” cornets fashioned from the horns of a ram proceeded again in front of Jehovah God’s “ark of the covenant”.

The verse continues, “… and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rereward came after the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.” Joshua added the words, “and blew with the trumpets” or “and blasted loud sounds by the use of the cornets fashioned from ram’s horns”: “and the armed men” which means “and the male human beings or warriors who were equipped for battle” “went before them” or “departed and proceeded in advance and prior to the spiritual leaders”; “but the rereward” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the rear guard” “came after the ark of the LORD” or “followed the box or chest belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name of the One True God”, “the priests going on” which means “the spiritual leaders, rulers and officials departing, proceeding and moving”, “and blowing with the trumpets” or “and giving a blast or loud sound by the use of the cornets fashioned from ram’s horns”. Joshua or the writer shared how the “spiritual leaders” with the “cornets fashioned from the horns of a ram” blasted the horns, the men equipped for battle proceeded them, the rear guard followed Jehovah God’s “ark of the covenant” with the spiritual leaders moving forward and blasting the “cornets”.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how the people of Israel aligned themselves once again to encircle the city of Jericho. The spiritual leaders with the seven cornets made from ram’s horns were there. The warriors equipped for battle were there. The rear guard was there, and the “ark of the covenant” was with them as well. They were following God’s plan for them, and because they were obedient, they were proceeding according to His ways. God has a plan for us and well, and that plan begins with us putting our faith and trust in His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the grave after three days. When we yield to His way as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and help us carry out His plan and will for our lives.

Next time Joshua or the writer says, “the second day they compassed the city once”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
