Calling Jesus Accursed 1 Corinthians 12:3

Paul the apostle did not want the church members in Corinth to be “ignorant” of “spiritual gifts”, and he began his discourse with a reference to them being “Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as” they “were led”. In chapter twelve and verse three of First Corinthians, Paul told the Corinthian church members, no man speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed”, where we read:

Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

The verse begins, Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed:”. Paul began with the word, “wherefore” which means “for which cause, on account of and therefore” “I give you” which means “Paul made known, declared and certified” “to understand” which means “know and have knowledge”, “that no man” which refers to “so no person whether male or female” “speaking” or “uttering by voice or emitting a sound” “by the Spirit” which means “through the spiritual nature of Christ that is higher than the highest angels and equal to God and the divine nature of Christ” “of God” which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “calls” or “speaks, maintains and affirms” “Jesus” whose name means “Jehovah is Salvation” and is “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “accursed” which is the Greek word anathema”or “cursed, without hope of being redeemed, doomed and devoted to the direst of woes”. Paul desired for the church members “to understand” that no one who was making declaration according to “the Holy Spirit of God” could “say” that “Jesus” is “cursed and doomed”.

The verse continues, and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.” Paul added the words, “and that no man” which means “nor could any person whether male or female” “say” or “speak, command, grant or tell” “that Jesus” which refers to “Jehovah is Salvation who is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “is the Lord” or “he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “but” which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be written takes precedence over what was just stated “by” or “through” “the Holy” which means “pure, morally blameless ceremonially and consecrated” “Ghost” or “the spiritual nature of Christ who is higher than the highest angels and equal to God and the divine nature of Christ ”. Paul also declared that no one could declare that “Jesus is Lord” except through the Holy Spirit of God.

When we meditate upon these words from Paul, we notice his reference to someone declaring Jesus to be “accursed” as well as another calling Him Lord. Each of these involve the “Spirit of God”. Nobody who makes a true revelation concerning Jesus Christ is able to do so without God's Spirit, and anyone who pronounces “doom and a curse” upon Jesus does not have the Spirit of God. Paul delivered this doctrine to the Corinthians to be certain these behaviors are recognized, and when someone “cursed” Christ or declared Him to be Lord, they would be able to discern the source of their declarations. Let us allow the Spirit of God to inhabit our lives so we may be certain that what we declare is in keeping with the truth concerning Jesus.

Next time Paul shares how the church member “diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
