More Value than Many Sparrows - Matthew 10:31

Matthew the apostle shared how Jesus told His disciples, “fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Jesus asked, “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-one of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “you are of more value than many sparrows” where we read:

Fear you not therefore, you are of more value than many sparrows.

The verse reads, Fear you not therefore, ...” Matthew began with the words, “fear you not” which means “do not flee, be put to flight or be afraid” “therefore” or “then, accordingly, consequently and these things being so”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples since God watched over every “sparrow” they had no need to be afraid.

The verse continues, “... you are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew added the words, “you are of more value” which means “the disciples of Jesus excel, surpass, are much better than and of greater worth,” “than many sparrows” or “compared to a great amount of little birds especially of the sparrow sort”. Matthew shared how Jesus told Hi disciples they were more “valuable” than a great amount of “sparrows”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see Jesus reassuring His disciples of their “value and worth”. Compared to the little “sparrows” that God watches over carefully, they were of much greater “worth” than them. God loves and values people, and He desires to have a relationship with every person who will “believe and trust” in His Son Jesus Christ as their “Savior and Lord”. If there is ever doubt as to whether a person is valuable or not, perhaps a glance at the “sparrows” will help, and the lyrics of the song, “His Eye is on the Sparrow” should certainly come to mind - “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me”.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples what will happen to, “whosoever therefore shall confess me before men”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
