David Served His Generation - Acts 13:36

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Paul spoke to the people in the synagogue in Antioch about Jesus' death, burial and resurrection, and afterward referred to the Psalms that read, “You are my Son, this day have I begotten you. And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. Wherefore he said also in another psalm, You shall not suffer your Holy One to see corruption”, and in chapter thirteen and verse thirty-six of the book of Acts Luke shared to how Paul referred to how David, “served his own generation by the will of God” where we read:

For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God,

fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

The verse begins, “For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, ... Luke began with the words, “for David” which means “because, since and on account that David whose name means beloved and was the second king of Israel”, “after he had served” or “following the time David ministered, rendered services to and ruled over” “his own generation” which means “David's own successive members of his genealogy” “by the will of God” or “through the counsel and purpose of the Heavenly Father God”. Luke shared how “Paul” referred to the time “King David” of Israel was allotted to serve his own “generation”.

The verse goes on to say, “... fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: Luke continued with the words, “fell on sleep” which means “expired, became lifeless, quiet, still and calm”, “and was laid unto his fathers” or “and was gathered, joined with and put to rest in death alongside David's forefathers”, “and saw corruption” which means “and experienced, observed and perceived destruction or decay of the physical body”. Luke shared how “Paul” referred to how the physical body of King David suffered decay after his death and burial.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how “Paul” continued to share with the people in the synagogue concerning Jesus' resurrection by referring to King David's death and burial. Unlike Jesus, David's physical body decayed. Jesus was resurrected from the dead before His body was “corrupted”, and because God sent Him to the world to be the “Savior and Lord”, His body would not decay as all others who died before Him. Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the world, and He was raised from the dead on the third day following. He is alive and has provided a path for people to be forgiven of theirs sins and live eternally with God in Heaven. Those who carefully study these things and realize God's plan of “salvation” through Jesus should surrender their life to Him and align with His everlasting plan.

Next time Luke shares how Paul refers to how Jesus, “saw no corruption”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
