Mark wrote how “the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. And he said unto them, Come you yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat”, and in chapter six and verse thirty-two of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus and disciples, “departed into a desert place by ship” where we read:
And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.
The verse reads, “And they departed into a desert place ...” Mark began with the words, “and they departed” which means “and Jesus and His disciples left and went forth” “into a desert place” or “into a solitary, lonely, desolate and uninhabited location”. Mark shared how Jesus lead His disciples toward a “solitary and uninhabited” location.
The verse goes on to say, “... by ship privately.” Mark continued with the words, “by ship” which means “through means of a boat or sailing vessel” “privately” which means “by themselves, apart, without others knowing and alone”. Mark shared how Jesus and His disciples by themselves left the area they were in by a “boat”.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus and His disciples employed the use of another “ship” to sail to a deserted place. Jesus was resourceful, and because His disciples needed to “rest”, He chose to separate themselves from the crowds. There are times when Jesus Himself went to be “alone” with His Heavenly Father, and His example should demonstrate to everyone reading these words how important “rest” and “refreshment” are in ministry. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and those who yield their lives to Him will discover that He cares not only for their “spiritual needs” but for their “physical needs” as well.
Next time Mark shares how, “the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
