Mark wrote how Jesus, “constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out. For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and said unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered”, and in chapter six and verse fifty-two of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus' disciples, “considered not the miracle of the loaves” where we read:
For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.
The verse reads, “For they considered not the miracle of the loaves:” Mark began with the words, “for they considered not” which means “because, since and on account that Jesus' disciples did not understand or comprehend” “the miracle” which means “the supernatural work of Jesus” “of the loaves” or “pertaining to the food composed of flour mixed with water and baked”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples still did not understand His “miracle” performed by blessing and braking the bread and fishes for the multitude.
The verse continues, “for their heart was hardened.” Mark added words, “for their heart” which means “because, since and on account that the disciples' souls or minds as within them is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors” “was hardened” or “was made dull, callous and without the power of understanding”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples “souls” were “callous and dull” so they did not understand Jesus' “miracle” with the “loaves and fishes”.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we understand the reason for the “amazement and wonder” of Jesus' disciples concerning the stopping of the tempestuous wind. The disciples of Jesus still had not processed accurately the “miracle” He performed as He fed over “five thousand” men plus women and children. Jesus has “power” over the “physical world”. He created it (See John 1:3), and His disciples were in His presence. Whether there are troubles with food, winds or any other earthly thing, Jesus the Messiah is able to control them all. Those who are wise will submit themselves to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and come to know Him as the One who rules over every condition that becomes contrary to them.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus and His disciples, “came into the land of Gennesaret”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
