Rejecting God's Commandment for Your Own - Mark 7:9

Mark wrote how Jesus referred to Isaiah's prophesy as He answered the Pharisees and scribes concerning their “tradition” of ceremonial washings where Isaiah said, “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things you do”, and in chapter seven and verse nine of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus told the Pharisees and some of the scribes, “full well you reject the commandment of God” where we read:

And he said unto them, Full well you reject the commandment of God,

that you may keep your own tradition.

The verse reads,And he said unto them, Full well you reject the commandment of God, ...” Mark began with the words, “and he said” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which means “to the Pharisees and scribes”, “full well you reject” which means “in a beautiful, fine, excellent and right way the Pharisees and scribes do away with, set aside and disregard” “the commandment of God” or “the order, charge, precept and injunction that belongs to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Mark shared how these “religious leaders” totally disregard God's law.

The verse continues, “... that you may keep your own tradition. Mark added the words, “that you may keep” which means “so the Pharisees and scribes can attend to carefully, take care of, guard, observe and reserve” “your own tradition” or “the Pharisees and scribes' precepts, ordinances and substance of teaching”. Mark shared how the “religious leaders” “disregarded” God's law so they could observe their own.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus told these “Pharisees and scribes” how they prioritize their own rules and set aside God's. It is always interesting to see how people develop rules that are separate from the word of God and then enforce those rules as though they are superior to God's. God loves people, and His desire is for them to know Him through His Son Jesus, and when they submit themselves to Him, they shall find that God knows best, and there is no “man-made rule or tradition” superior to His.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus tells the Pharisees and scribes, “Moses said, Honor your father and your mother”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
