Mark wrote, “In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said unto them, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far. And his disciples answered him, From where can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? And he asked them, How many loaves do you have? And they said, Seven. And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people”, and in chapter eight and verse seven of his book, Mark shared how Jesus' disciples brought Him, “a few small fishes” where we read:
And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.
The verse reads, “And they had a few small fishes:” Mark began with the words, “and they had a few small fishes” which means “and Jesus' disciples obtained a small amount of fish in addition to the seven loaves”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples also discovered there were a “few small fishes” which could be distributed to the crowd as well.
The verse goes on to say, “and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.” Mark continued with the words, “and he blessed” which means “and Jesus consecrated with solemn prayers and invoked prosperity and praise to God”, “and commanded” or “and ordered, directed and enjoined” “to set them also” which means “to put and place the few fish even and indeed” “before them” or “in front of the people in the crowd”. Mark shared how Jesus “consecrated” the “few fishes” with prayer and “directed” His “disciples” to set them “also” in front of the people.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus continued His process as these “few fish” were brought to Him as well. Once again He “blessed” them and told His disciples to distribute them before the people. God is able to do miracles even when there seems to be “no way possible” for these things to happen. Jesus fed all these people with “seven loaves” and a “few small fishes”, and He is able to “save” every person who will yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Receiving Him is like receiving “Divine food” for the “soul”, and those who are wise will come and dine.
Next time Mark shares how the people, “did eat, and were filled”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
