Mark wrote how Jesus, “departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee,
through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. And they brought unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseeched him to put his hand upon him”, and in chapter seven and verse thirty-three of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus, “spit, and touched his tongue” where we read:And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears,
and he spit, and touched his tongue;
The verse reads, “And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, ...” Mark began with the words, “and he took him aside” which means “and Jesus took the man away and separate” “from the multitude” or “from the crowd of people who had gathered”, “and put his fingers” which means “and inserted His physical fingers” “into his ears” or “into the man's physical ears”. Mark shared how Jesus separated the “deaf and tongue-tied” man from the crowd of people and “inserted” His “fingers” into the man's “ears”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and he spit, and touched his tongue;” Mark continued with the words, “and he spit” which means “and Jesus eject saliva forcibly from His mouth”, “and touched his tongue” or “and fastened, adhered and made physical contact with the man's tongue”. Mark shared how Jesus “spit” and physically laid hold of the man's “tongue”.
When we think through upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus separated the man who was “dumb and tongue-tied” from the multitude of people before He made physical contact with Him. This was the “Creator” in contact with His creation, and simply touching the man's ears and tongue was going to produce a miracle for Him. God loves people to recognize Him for who He is and relate to Him through His Son Jesus as a “personal” God who knows and cares for all. Jesus said, “For with God nothing shall be impossible” (See Luke 1:37), and “the things which are impossible with men are possible with God”. (See Luke 18:27). The men who carried the “dumb and tongue-tied” man to Jesus believed He could heal him, and may all who read these words believe it too.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “Ephphatha, that is, be opened”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
