Mark wrote how Jesus' “disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod”, and in chapter eight and verse sixteen of his book, Mark shared how the disciples of Jesus said, “it is because we have no bread” where we read:
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.
The verse reads, “And they reasoned among themselves, saying, ...” Mark began with the words, “and they reasoned” which means “and Jesus' disciples brought together and reckoned different reasons, resolved in their minds and deliberated” “among themselves” or “toward and in regard to their own selves” “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples began to “deliberate” concerning Jesus' statement about being aware of the “leaven of the Pharisees” and “Herod” and concluded the following.
The verse continues, “... It is because we have no bread.” Mark added the words, “it is because” which means “since and in that” “we have no bread” or “Jesus' disciples did not have any food comprised of flour mixed with water and baked”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples decided the reason Jesus said what He did about “leaven” was because they forgot to bring “bread” with them.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' disciples were still thinking about “physical” things rather than “spiritual”. Jesus was speaking of the “Pharisees and Herod's” doctrine, and they thought He was talking about “physical bread”. Oh how the patience of Jesus is demonstrated with His disciples, and He is very patient with those who “just don't get it” yet. God is concerned for the “spiritual lives” of all people, and His desire is that they be fed from His “spiritual food” concerning His “gospel” or “good news” of salvation. God's plan is eternal, and when a person yields their life to His Son Jesus by believing and trusting in Him, they will have dined upon the “food” that lasts forever and shall live with God throughout all eternity.
Next time Mark shares, “when Jesus knew it, he said unto them, Why do you reason because you have no bread?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
