Mark wrote how Jesus and the disciples, “departed into a desert place by ship privately. And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him. And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed”, and in chapter six and verse thirty-six of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus' disciples said, “send them away, that they may go into the country … and buy themselves bread” where we read:
Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages,
and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.
The verse reads, “Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, ...” Mark began with the words, “send them away” which means “set free, dismiss, depart and release the people”, “that they may go” or “so they people can depart and leave”, “into the country round about” which refers to “into the territory, country seats, farms and neighboring hamlets near them”, “and into the villages” which means “and into the towns and abiding places”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples thought Jesus should “dismiss” the people so they could depart into nearby “towns, villages and abiding places” .
The verse goes on to say, “... and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.” Mark continued with the words, “and buy themselves bread” which means “and purchase or redeem food of any kind or loaves composed of flour mixed with water”: “for they have nothing” which means “because, since and on account that the people do not have any food” “to eat” or “to consume or devour”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples thought dismissing the people into the nearby “villages and towns” would allow them to purchase “food” because they had nothing to consume in the “desert place”.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' disciples were concerned for the physical needs of the people to whom they were ministering. They knew there was no food where they were to satisfy the multitudes' hunger, so they thought it would be a good idea to send them to nearby “towns and villages” so they could “buy food” for themselves. Jesus had a different idea in mind which we shall see in the next few verses, but suffice it for now to know that God knows the “physical and spiritual” needs of every person, and those who are “hungry” in either state, Jesus Christ is able to “satisfy and fill”.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “Give you them to eat”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
