Mark wrote how Jesus' “disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread. And when Jesus knew it, he said unto them, Why reason you, because you have no bread? perceive you not yet, neither understand? have you your heart yet hardened?”, and in chapter eight and verse eighteen of his book, Mark shared how Jesus asked His disciples about “seeing, hearing and remembering” where we read:
Having eyes, see you not? and having ears, hear you not? and do you not remember?
The verse reads, “Having eyes, see you not? and having ears, hear you not?” Mark began with the words, “having eyes” which means “holding, owning and possessing physical eyes for seeing”, “see you not” or “do the disciples not discern, perceive, discover or understand”? “and having ears” which means “and holding, owning and possessing physical ears for hearing” “hear you not” or “have you not been given the faculty for hearing, perceiving, understanding or comprehending”? Mark shared how Jesus questioned His disciple concerning having “eyes and ears” but not being able to “perceive, understand or comprehend” what He was declaring.
The verse continues, “and do you not remember?” Mark added the words, “and do you” which means “and did Jesus' disciples” “not remember” or “not hold in memory, keep in mind and rehearse”? Mark shared how Jesus asked His disciples whether or not they “kept in mind” what He is going to declare.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus appealed to His disciples ability to “perceive and understand” His declaration concerning the “leaven” of the “Pharisees and Herod”. Though they had “physical eyes and ears” and minds for “remembering”, they were not employing these tools to discover His “spiritual” reference. God has given people so many “tools” in which to “see and hear” His “gospel” of “salvation”, and although He has provided these things, some people just do not understand. May these words of Jesus provoke every person who reads them to seek to “comprehend” God's great message and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus reminds His disciples about, “the five loaves among five thousand”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
