Mark wrote how Jesus said to the Pharisees and scribes, “Moses said, Honor your father and your mother; and, Whosoever curses father or mother, let him die the death. But you say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever you might be profited by me; he shall be free. And you suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother. Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which you have delivered: and many such like things do you. And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear”, and in chapter seven and verse seventeen of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus' disciples question Him, “concerning the parable” where we read:
And when he was entered into the house from the people,
his disciples asked him concerning the parable.
The verse reads, “And when he was entered into the house from the people, ...” Mark began with the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “he was entered” or “Jesus was come and made entrance” “into the house” which means “into the dwelling place, residence, abode and domicile where one has settled” “from the people” or “separate and apart from the multitude”. Mark shared how Jesus came into another “house” where He could separate Himself from the “crowd of people” who were outside.
The verse continues, “... his disciples asked him concerning the parable.” Mark added the words, “his disciples” which means “Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “asked him” or “inquired of and questioned Jesus” “concerning the parable” which means “about and because of Jesus' earthly story with a heavenly meaning”. Mark shared how Jesus' “disciples” inquired of Him concerning His last story to the people.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' “disciples” did not always understand what Jesus was teaching. They asked Jesus what He meant when He declared, “There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man”. God wants people to understand what He has to say, and when they put their “faith and trust” in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He opens their understanding so they may know more and more about the important truths He declares.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus asks His disciples, “are you so without understanding also?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
