Mark wrote how, “a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of” Jesus “and came and fell at his feet: The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs”, and in chapter seven and verse twenty-nine of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus told the woman, “the devil is gone out of your daughter” where we read:
And he said unto her, For this saying go your way; the devil is gone out of your daughter.
The verse reads, “And he said unto her, For this saying go your way;” Mark began with the words, “and he said” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto her” or “to the woman whose daughter was demon possessed”, “for this saying” which means “because of the utterance, declaration and proclamation of the woman” “go your way” or “withdraw yourself, depart and leave”. Mark shared how Jesus affirmed the woman's statement and told her to depart from Him.
The verse goes on to say, “the devil is gone out of your daughter.” Mark continued with Jesus' words, “the devil” which means “the evil and unclean spirit” “is gone out” or “is departed and gone away from out” “of your daughter” which means “of the woman's young daughter”. Mark shared how Jesus told the woman “the unclean spirit or demon” was “departed” from her “daughter”.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how this woman received what she wanted because of her persistent faith. Though Jesus set a verbal obstacle in front of this woman, she presented a convincing and believable argument to Jesus. Jesus rewarded her by casting the “demon” out of her daughter. God loves people who are persistent, and when they recognize He is persistent toward them as well, they do best when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Mark shares how the woman, “found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
