Mark wrote how Jesus and the disciples, “departed into a desert place by ship privately. And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him. And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed”, and in chapter six and verse thirty-seven of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “Give you them to eat” where we read:
He answered and said unto them, Give you them to eat.
And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?
The verse reads, “He answered and said unto them, Give you them to eat.” Mark began with the words, “He answered” which means “Jesus responded and began to speak” “and said unto them” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “give you them” which means “you grant, bestow, furnish and supply food to the people” “to eat” or “to consume and devour”. Mark shared how Jesus told told His disciples to “feed” the people.
The verse continues, “And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?” Mark added the words, “and they say” which means “and Jesus' disciples uttered, declared, proclaimed and presented a question” “unto him” which refers to “Jesus”, “shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth” or “should the disciples depart and leaven to purchase two hundred denarius which means containing ten and was the principal silver coin of the Roman empire. A denarius was the ordinary pay for a day's wages” “of bread” which means “pertaining to food or loaves composed of flour mixed with water” “and give them to eat” or “and grant, bestow, furnish and supply them to the people to consume and devour”? Mark shared how Jesus' disciples wondered if Jesus thought they should go into the towns surrounding them and purchase “two hundred day's wages” worth of food to feed them.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' disciples thought in the natural. They saw how many people were surrounding them and their idea was that it would take about “two hundred day's wages” to feed them all. This response to Jesus is typical of most when something seems “impossible”, however, what is “impossible” for man is “possible” for God. Jesus knew what He was going to do, and all His disciples needed was to believe and trust in Him. Since Jesus knows how to care for the feeding of thousands of people, does He not know how to care for whatever needs people have in their lives? Believe and trust in Him today.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus asks His disciples, “How many loaves have you?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
