The physician Luke wrote how the disciples of Jesus, some other women, Jesus' mother Mary and His brothers were gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem, and “in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spoke before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take”, and in chapter one and verse twenty-one of the book of Acts Luke wrote how Peter refers to, “these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us” where we read:
Wherefore of these men which have companied with us
all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
The verse begins, “Wherefore of these men which have companied with us ...” Luke began with the words, “wherefore of these men” which means “which or who among the male human beings” “which have companied with us” or “who have come together, cohabited and assembled alongside we other eleven original disciples”. Luke shared how “Peter” began to conclude that the original disciples should consider the “men” who “accompanied” them during the time they were with Jesus.
The verse goes on to say, “... all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, ...” Luke continued with the words, “all the time” or “in all the space of time” “that the Lord Jesus” which means “in which the Lord or One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah, Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “went in and out among us” or “emanated, flowed back and forth and issued with and before us, Jesus' original disciples”. Luke shared how “Peter” referred to the “men” who accompanied the “original disciples” during the time Jesus was ministering before them.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Peter” had a plan for replacing the spot “Judas” vacated among the original disciples. The other “disciples” who were with Jesus during the entire time He ministered were to be considered, and soon they would choose who would join them. We shall read more about this in our next few verses, but for now, let us consider that God's prophesy concerning this would be fulfilled, and each time He completes His word, it bears testimony that God has a plan for the salvation of mankind. God wants everyone to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and those who yield to Him align with His purpose and plan for fulfilling all scriptures that relate to His salvation plan.
Next time Luke shares how Peter continues by saying, “one must be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
