Luke the physician wrote how Peter spoke about Jesus to the multitude gathered outside the house where the upper room was located. “Peter” said, “Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain. Whom God has raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. For David spoke concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved. Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope. Because you will not leave my soul in hell, neither will you suffer your Holy One to see corruption”, and in chapter two and verse twenty-eight of the book of Acts Luke shared how Peter told the multitude that King David said, “you have made known to me the ways of life” where we read:
You have made known to me the ways of life; you shall make me full of joy with your countenance.
The verse begins, “You have made known to me the ways of life;” Luke began with the words, “you have made known to me” which means “you, God, have disclosed, declared and certified to me, the Messiah Jesus” “the ways of life” or “the journey, traveled way and course of conduct pertaining to the absolute fullness of life which is real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever.” Luke shared how “Peter” referred to “King David's words” concerning God disclosing to the Messiah the “course of conduct” for living. (See Psalm 16:11 and 21:4-5)
The verse goes on to say, “you shall make me full of joy with your countenance.” Luke continued with the words, “you shall make me full of joy” or “you, God, will render, furnish and supplied liberally me, the Messiah, with abounding, complete and consummate good cheer and gladness” “with your countenance” which means “by the use and engagement of your, God's, presence, look and appearance”. Luke shared how “Peter” referred to “King David's” statement about God the Heavenly Father making the “Messiah, His Son Jesus”, filled with “gladness and good cheer” by His appearance and presence. (See Psalm 4:6-7)
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “King David of Israel” prophesied concerning the Messiah, Jesus, as He knew God's “way” of living, and because the “presence” of God was with Him, the Messiah's “joy” was filled. Jesus is the Messiah of God, and He demonstrated the “way” to live, and He showed all who will examine His life how to be “filled” with “joy” as God's face shines upon them. We will learn more about what “Peter” said concerning “King David” in our next verse, but for now let us consider how God shared in advance His knowledge of His “Messiah”, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be the “Savior and Lord”, every person has the opportunity to receive Him into their life. Let all who read these words consider the words of “Peter and King David” and yield their life to Jesus who is the Lord and Savior of the world.
Next time Luke shares how Peter tells the multitude how King David, “is both dead and buried”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
