Luke the physician wrote how Jesus' disciples and others were gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem when suddenly there was a loud noise and “cloven tongues” sat upon them. They began to speak in languages that were previously unknown to them, and a multitude of people gathered outside the home to see what was happening and “were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What does this mean? Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, You men of Judaea, and all you that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words ...”, and in chapter two and verse fifteen of the book of Acts Luke shared how Peter said, “these are not drunken, as you suppose” where we read:
For these are not drunken, as you suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
The verse begins, “For these are not drunken, as you suppose, ...” Luke began with the words, “these are not drunken” which means “because, since and on account that the one hundred and twenty people in the upper room are not intoxicated or inebriated”, “as you suppose” or “in the manner and way that you think and have surmised they are”. Luke shared how “Peter” told the multitude the people they were observing were not “intoxicated” like they thought.
The verse goes on to say, “... seeing it is but the third hour of the day.” Luke continued with the words, “seeing it is but the third hour” or “because, since and on account that even so and indeed it is only the third hour of the day which means nine o'clock” “of the day” which means “in the morning”. Luke shared how “Peter” referred to the time this event occurred which was “nine o'clock” in the morning which would not have been a time when most people were inebriated.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn not only that they people were not “drunk” like some of the crowd thought, but also that it was “nine o'clock” in the morning when all the people were observing them. God poured out His Spirit upon the church in the morning, and He allowed the multitude to see what He was doing. Though some in the crowd thought these one hundred and twenty people were “intoxicated”, they were soon to know this was their opportunity to know His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” which would grant them forgiveness of their sins and everlasting life with God.
Next time Luke shares how Peter says, “this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
