Luke the physician wrote after the Holy Spirit came upon the people in the upper room, a crowd gathered who wondered if they were drunken. Jesus' disciple “Peter” stood up and declared, “this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel. And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come”, and in chapter two and verse twenty-one of the book of Acts Luke shared how “Peter” declared, “whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” where we read:
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
The verse begins, “And it shall come to pass, ...” Luke began with the words, “and it shall come” which means “and it will arise, appear and come on the scene” “to pass” or “to go on”, and the following will happen. Luke shared how “Peter” continued to share “the prophet Joel's” words as he spoke of things that would happen and occur according to the following.
The verse goes on to say, “... that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Luke continued with the words, “that whosoever” or “that whatever person whether male or female” “shall call on the name of the Lord” which means “will cry out, summon and appeal to everything the name and is used for and which the name covers including the thoughts or feelings of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering” “shall be saved” or “will exist as rescued, kept safe and made well”. Luke shared how “Peter” declared what “Joel” said the result of this outpouring of God's Spirit would be, and anyone who “called” upon the “Lord's name” would be “rescued, kept safe and made well”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn the outcome of God “pouring out His Spirit upon all flesh”. God will make available to every person the opportunity to receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Anyone who “calls” upon Him will be “saved” by the forgiveness of their sins and receiving everlasting life with God. Those who are wise will not only understand the benefit to the “pouring out of God's Spirit”, but also yield to the only One who is able to “save” them for all eternity.
Next time Luke shares how Peter says, “You men of Israel, hear these words;”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
