In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “Be not hasty in your spirit to be angry: for anger rests in the bosom of fools”, and in chapter seven and verse ten of his book Solomon said, “say not you, What is the cause that the former days were better than these?” where we read,
Say not you, What is the cause that the former days were better than these?
for you do not inquire wisely concerning this.
The verse reads, “Say not you, What is the cause that the former days were better than these?” Solomon began with the words, “say not you” or “do not utter, declare, proclaim or ask”, “what is the cause” which means “whatsoever exist the basis, ground or reason” “that the former days were better” or “that previous time period or division of time existed as more pleasant, agreeable, excellent and valuable” “than these” which means “compared to the current time period”? Solomon instructed his readers not to question the reason that previous time periods were superior to the current one.
The verse continues, “ for you do not inquire wisely concerning this.” Solomon added the words, “for your do not inquire wisely” or “because, since and on account that you, Solomon’s readers, do not ask, request or demand in a shrewd, skilled and prudent manner” “concerning this” which means “about the reason previous time periods were superior”. Solomon told his readers that they did not ask a shrewd and prudent question about the current time period versus previous ones.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover through Solomon how there were people who were inclined to say the past was superior to the current time period. This is a common thought and question, however, we are living in the now. God wants us to be reminded of the past and think about the future, but we are to live in the present. God loves us, and because He has everlasting “age-abiding” life in His mind, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. When we submit our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth concerning the past, present and future as we live in a present state before His eyes.
Next time Solomon says, “wisdom is good with an inheritance”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
