Be Not Hasty to Be Angry - Ecclesiastes 7:9

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit, and in chapter seven and verse nine of his book Solomon said, “be not hasty in your spirit to be angry” where we read,

Be not hasty in your spirit to be angry: for anger rests in the bosom of fools.

The verse reads, Be not hasty in your spirit to be angry: Solomon began with the words, “be not hasty” or “do not be anxious, afraid, disturbed or nervous” “in your spirit” which means “within your, Solomon’s readers’, mind, vigor, vivacity and temper” “to be angry” or “to exist as filled with wrath that wrinkles the nostrils and nose”. Solomon instructed his readers not to be quick to be filled with wrath in their minds and souls.

The verse goes on to say, “for anger rests in the bosom of fools.” Solomon continued with the words, “for anger rests” or “because, since and on account that wrath that wrinkles the nostrils and nose settles down, remains and resides” “in the bosom of fools” which means “within the hollow, lap and midst belonging to dullards, simpletons and stupid fellows”. Solomon said the reason his readers were not supposed to be quick to wrath was because wrath settles down inside people who are simpletons and dullards.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn about Solomon’s instruction concerning being quick to wrath, (See James 1:19) and because an “angry” spirit can remain within a person, we are never to allow it to stay within us. (See Ephesians 4:26) The Psalmist wrote concerning Jehovah God, The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy” (See Psalm 103:8), and He wants us to be the same way. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of everyone, and when He raised Him from the grave after three days, He made the way for those who believe and trust in Him as “Savior and Lord” to be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and equipped with His Holy Spirit who will give us self-control so we do not become filled with wrath in a hasty manner, but take everything to Him in prayer.

Next time Solomon says, “say not you, What is the cause that the former days were better than these?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
