Carrying My Own Leash

While walking 'pon my saunter trail
mine eyes did there but see
a strolling canine creature there
his owner did he lead

The dog's possessor well equipped
with leash control in hand
and pacing pet at her request
did follow her commands

Heel but here and squat but there
and pace when I say so
tis on this walk that I shall lead
and track where thou must go

Till all at once with fearful force
the canine yanked his leash
and forced the female leader there
his tether to release

But gather did that bruising dog
his leash in mouth to hold
and lead himself to other sites
that he wished to behold

And trot along did thus canine
with forceful haughty stand
for leadership he'd need no more
relinquished her command

And run behind at rapid pace
his owner now in tow
determined not to let her dog
continue in this show

But faster did he lead her on
while looking back with grin
as if to say in doggy talk
this race you'll never win

So scream out loud the canine's name
Stop Slowpoke” did she yell
for how much longer give him chase
she dare not but could tell

And looking back did “Slowpoke” peek
to see her lag behind
and slowing pace he trotted then
to ease his owner's mind

When finally he came to stop
and dropped his leash to ground
and let his owner capture him
while she made gasping sounds

And hearing rant and angry charge
he turned his head to see
as if to listen and ignore
the name she'd given he

For in thus time did “Slowpoke” know
this race she did not win
and should she ever challenge him
his leash he tote again
