Moses' Faithful Testimony Hebrews 3:5

The writer of Hebrews has shown the superiority of Jesus to “angels and prophets”. He also showed Jesus as creator and the one responsible for providing salvation to mankind. He demonstrated Jesus' worthiness as the One who “built all things” rather than a “house” like Moses, and in chapter three and verse five of Hebrews we see how Moses was “a faithful servant” where we read:

And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant,
for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;

The verse begins, “And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant,...” The writer began with the words, “And Moses” whose name means “drawing out” and was “the legislator of the Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of the Jewish religion” “verily” or “truly, certainly, surely and indeed” “was faithful” which means “trusty, worthy of trust and relied on” “in all his house” or “habitation, building, palace or tabernacle”, “as a servant” which means “attendant who discharges the duties committed to him”. Moses was obedient to God in his house in the same manner a “servant” was to his master.

The verse goes on to say, “for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;” The writer continued, “for a testimony” which means “something evidential or specially witnessed” “of those things which were to be spoken after” which means “things uttered, emitted, articulated, proclaimed and declared”. Moses' faithfulness “as a servant” became a “witness” of the gospel of Jesus Christ which was to come after him.

When we think through these words in Hebrews, we see the importance of the “faithfulness” of Moses. Because he was “faithful” and Jesus was superior to him, his servanthood became a “witness” to the gospel of Jesus Christ. We should consider our “faithfulness” to the servanthood to which God has called us and whether our “obedience” becomes our “testimony” to the gospel. Let us examine ourselves, and be sure that we keep “trustworthy” to the tasks to which we are called.

Next time we see the writer share how Jesus is “as a son over his own house”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
