A Sound Heart - Proverbs 14:30

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalts folly”, and in chapter fourteen and verse thirty of Proverbs Solomon said, “a sound heart is the life of the flesh” where we read,

A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.

The verse begins, “A sound heart is the life of the flesh:” Solomon began with the words, “a sound heart” or “a healthy, cured and profitable inner man, soul, mind, will, understanding, knowledge, thinking, reflection, memory, inclination, resolution and determination” “is the life” which means “exists the fresh, flowing, active and lively living” “of the flesh” of “belonging to the body”. Solomon shared how fresh and active living within the body is found in a person with a healthy soul, mind and understanding.

The verse continues, “but envy the rottenness of the bones.” Solomon added the words, “but envy” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover ardor, zeal and jealousy” “the rottenness” which means “the decline, decrease and decay” “of the bones” or “pertaining to the essence, substance and limbs of the body”. Solomon said having ardor and jealousy causes decay to the “bones” or core of a person.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon that there is a difference between the person who has a healthy “soul” verses the one who is jealous and filled with ardor. God wants us to be “sound” in our souls, and because it causes us troubles within, God wants us to avoid “envy”. God loves us, and when we yield ourselves to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, we shall be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and helped through His Holy Spirit to have a “sound heart” that produces a fresh and flowing life.

Next time Solomon says, “He that oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
