In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “In the multitude of people is the king's honor: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twenty-nine of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that is slow to wrath is of great understanding” where we read,
He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalts folly.
The verse begins, “He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding:” Solomon began with the words, “he that is slow to wrath” or “the person whether male or female who exists as patient and long-suffering toward anger that wrinkles the nose and nostrils” “is of great understanding” which means “exists with abounding, numerous and abundant intelligence, insight, caprice, discretion, reason and skillfulness”. Solomon said the person who is patient toward anger has abundant insight and discretion.
The verse goes on to say, “but he that is hasty of spirit exalts folly.” Solomon continued with the words, “but he that is hasty of spirit” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the person whether male or female who is short and impatient within their mind, disposition and uncontrollable impulses” “exalts folly” which means “lifts up, raises and sets on high foolishness and silliness”. Solomon said the person who is impatient in their disposition and uncontrollable impulses sets on high foolish and silly behavior.
When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we learn the value of being long-suffering and patient in advance of becoming angry. People who are quickly rash and furious demonstrate foolishness without abundant insight that is demonstrated by people who restrain themselves. God is “slow to wrath”, and He is patient. (See Psalms 103:8; 145:8) He desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to be patient and long-suffering with people and circumstances that easily bring us to “wrath”.
Next time Solomon says, “a sound heart is the life of the flesh”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
