Accepting the Person of the Wicked- Proverbs 18:5

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook”, and in chapter eighteen and verse five of Proverbs Solomon said, “it is not good to accept the person of the wicked” where we read,

It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.

The verse begins, It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, ...Solomon began with the words, “it is not good to accept” or “it exists in no way or manner as pleasant, agreeable, excellent, valuable and appropriate” “to accept the person” which means “to lift, bear up, support, sustain or exalt the people whether male or female” “of the wicked” or “belonging to people who are criminal, guilty of crime, evil and hostile to God”. Solomon said it is unpleasant and inappropriate to exalt the people who are evil and hostile to God.

The verse continues, “... to overthrow the righteous in judgment.” Solomon added the words, “to overthrow” or “to stretch, extend, spread out and bend” “the righteous” which means “the people who are right, just, correct and lawful” “in judgment” or “within justice, ordinance, process, procedure and litigation”. Solomon said it is not pleasant nor agreeable to lift up people who are evil and hostile to God to terminate and subvert people who are right, just and lawful.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how we are not to exalt people who are evil and hostile to God so we may bring litigation against people who are lawful and just. God wants us to align with His “righteous” ways, and even though people may be well known and powerful, we are never to lift them up when they bring cases against people who are right and just. God sent His perfect Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we consider that evil people crucified Him and were exalted for doing so, they were in error. God loves us, and when we surrender our lives to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us in His ways and apart from magnifying “wicked” people who bring litigation against people who are right and just.

Next time Solomon says, “fool's lips enter into contention”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
