Matthew the apostle wrote about Jesus feeding four thousand men plus women and children, and afterward, “he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala. The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would show them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, you say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red . And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O you hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky; but can you not discern the signs of the times? A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread”, and in chapter sixteen and verse eight of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus called His disciples, “O you of little faith” where we read:
Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them,
O you of little faith, why reason you among yourselves, because you have brought no bread?
The verse reads, “Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, ...”. Matthew began with the word, “which when” which means “that at the time and moment” “Jesus” whose name means “Jehovah is Salvation” and is “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”, “perceived” which means “understood, had knowledge of and was acquainted with that which the disciples were concerned”, “he said” or Jesus “uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which refers to Jesus' disciples. Matthew shared how Jesus perceived the concern of the disciples about not taking bread with them and said the following words to them.
The verse continues, “O you of little faith, why reason you among yourselves, because you have brought no bread?” Matthew added the words, “O you” which means “O disciples who are” “of little faith” which means “who trust too little and lack confidence”, “why reason you” which means “for what reason and cause do the disciples muse, consider, resolve and deliberate” “among yourselves” or “among the group of disciples”, “because” which means “since and on account that” “you have brought” or “the disciples carried or brought along” “no bread” which means “not any loaves of bread which was made from flour mixed with water and baked”. Matthew shared how Jesus identified His disciples as having “little trust and a lack of confidence” since they forgot to bring “bread” with them.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus knew what His disciples were discussing without them disclosing it to Him. Jesus determined that His disciple were of “little trust” in Him because they were attempting to find “physical” solutions to their problem of nourishment. God desires people to worship Him “in spirit and in truth”, and those who receive His Son Jesus as the Messiah shall have all their needs supplied “according to His riches in glory” (See Philippians 4:19). Those who are wise shall yield their lives to Him and allow Him to be the one who trusted and relied upon as the “Savior and Lord” of their every need.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus asked His disciples, “do you not yet understand?”,, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
