Matthew the apostle wrote when Jesus and His disciples, “were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatic, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falls into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me”, and in chapter seventeen and verse eighteen of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus, “rebuked the devil” where we read:
And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
The verse reads, “And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and Jesus” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “rebuked” which means “chided, adjudged, reproved and censured severely” “the devil” or “the evil spirit or messenger and minister of the devil”; “and he departed out of” which means “came forth, got out and emanated from” “him” or “the son who was “lunatic and sore vexed”. Matthew shared how Jesus “commanded and reproved” the “demon” that possessed the son, and the “devil” left.
The verse goes on to say, “and the child was cured from that very hour.” Matthew added the words, “and the child” or “and the certain man's son” “was cured” which means “was healed and restored to health” “from that very hour” or “at that certain definite time”. Matthew shared how the man's son was “healed” from the very moment Jesus cast the demon out of him.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus had power over this “devil” that caused this son to cast himself into the fire and water. No entity is stronger or more powerful than Jesus, and when God, who is the Creator of everything, gets involved, every “demon” and “disease” has to flee. This same God desires people to have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him, regardless of their physical or spiritual condition, He is able to “heal, restore and make” them completely whole.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus' disciples ask Him, “why could we not cast him out?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
