Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus, “departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, you Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil”, and in chapter fifteen and verse twenty-three of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus, “answered her not a word” where we read:
But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying,
Send her away; for she cries after us.
The verse reads, “But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, ...”. Matthew began with the word, “but” which means “nevertheless, moreover and” “he answered her” or “Jesus responded and declared to the woman” “not a word” which means “not a single order, decree or mandate”. “And his disciples” which refers to “Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “came” or “approached and came forth” “and besought him” which means “and begged, asked, pled and desired Jesus”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Matthew shared how Jesus did not initially respond to the woman who asked Him for help, and because she continued her pursuit, Jesus' disciples begged Him to follow their next statement.
The verse goes on to say, “... Send her away; for she cries after us.” Matthew continued with the words, “send her away” which means “make the woman depart and leave”; “for she cries” or “because and since the woman cried aloud, vociferated spoke with a loud voice” “unto us” which means “to the disciples”. Matthew shared how Jesus' disciples asked Him to make the woman leave because she kept “crying out” to them.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we discover the persistence of this woman. A “daughter” possessed with a “devil” would make any caring mother “cry out” in desperation. Jesus was the only one who was able to heal and restore her daughter, and just because Jesus' disciples wanted her to quit bothering them, she would have none of it. God loves this kind of passion, and when people come to Him in “desperation” to be “saved”, though others may want us to leave Jesus alone, He stands ready to receive all who yield their lives unto Him.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus answered the woman by saying, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
