Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say unto this mountain, Remove from here to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goes not out but by prayer and fasting”, and in chapter seventeen and verse twenty-two of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples that He, “shall be betrayed into the hands of men” where we read:
And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
The verse reads, “And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and while they” or “and during the time Jesus and His disciples” “abode” which means “turned hither and thither, sojourned and dwelt” “in Galilee” or “the name of a region of northern Palestine, bounded on the north by Syria, on the west by Sidon, Tyre, Ptolemais and their territories and the promontory of Carmel, on the south by Samaria and on the east by the Jordan and means circuit”, “Jesus” which refers to “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “said” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which refers to “Jesus' disciples”. Matthew shared how Jesus began to speak to His disciples as they “sojourned” through the area of “Galilee”.
The verse continues, “... The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:” Matthew added the words, “The Son of man” or “Jesus the Son of God” “shall be betrayed” which means “will be given over and delivered up treacherously” “into the hands” or “in the power and might of determining and controlling destinies” “of men” which means “belonging to male human beings”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples how He would be “given over and delivered up treacherously” to the power of men.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus shared His fate with His disciples. Though they were unaware at this point, Jesus let the disciples know He would be “betrayed” over to “men”. God's plan of “salvation” for mankind included having His Son be “treacherously delivered” over to people who wanted to destroy Him. This is because He loves people and desires to have a relationship with them through His Son Jesus, and when a person seriously considers all God did to “save them from their sins”, they should yield their lives to Him as “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
