Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. And his disciples say unto him, Where should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?”, and in chapter fifteen and verse thirty-four of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus asked His disciples, “how many loaves have you?” where we read:
And Jesus said unto them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
The verse reads, “And Jesus said unto them, How many loaves have you?” Matthew began with the words, “and Jesus” which means “and Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “said” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which means “to Jesus' disciples”, “How many loaves” or “what number of bread loaves which are composed of flour mixed with water and baked” “have you” which refers to “do the disciples possess”. Matthew shared how Jesus questioned His disciples concerning the amount of “bread loaves” they had among themselves.
The verse goes on to say, “And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.” Matthew continued the words, “and they said” which means “and the disciples uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “seven” or “a number of seven loaves”, “and a few little fishes” which means “and a small and little amount of fishes”. Matthew shared how the disciples answered Jesus' question about the loaves with the number “seven”, and they added that they have a small amount of fish as well.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how “seven loaves and a few little fishes” seem like such a small amount of food among a huge crowd of people. However, Jesus was involved, and He was able to multiply supernaturally whatever amount of food the disciples obtained. God has a plan in mind to provide “salvation” to people through His Son Jesus, and when people submit whatever they have to Him, He is able to multiply it according to the person's need.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus , “commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
