Matthew the apostle wrote about Jesus feeding four thousand men plus women and children, and afterward, “he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala. The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would show them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, you say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red . And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O you hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky; but can you not discern the signs of the times? A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed”, and in chapter sixteen and verse five of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus' disciples, “had forgotten to take bread” where we read:
And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.
The verse reads, “And when his disciples were come to the other side, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “his disciples” or “Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “were come” which means “approached and came near” “to the other side” or “the opposite side of the Sea of Galilee”. Matthew shared how Jesus along with His disciples traveled by boat and went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee again.
The verse goes on to say, “... they had forgotten to take bread.” Matthew continued with the words, “they had forgotten” which means “the disciples had not remembered and neglected” “to take bread” which means “to carry loaves made with flour mixed with water and baked”. Matthew shared how Jesus' “disciples” did not remember to carry “bread” with them for their trip.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see Jesus traveling with His “disciples” by boat again, and when they did not remember to take “bread” with them, they may have wondered what they would eat while together. Jesus loves for people to “travel” with Him, and when they do or do not have their physical provisions, He is sufficient to meet all their needs.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees” come to Jesus again, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
