Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, “There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if you will, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias”, and in chapter seventeen and verse five of his book, Matthew shares how, “a voice out of the cloud” said, “this is my beloved Son” where we read:
While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear you him.
The verse reads, “While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud,”. Matthew began with the words, “while he yet spake” or “during the time and moment when Peter was uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “a bright cloud” or “a well lit, lustrous, transparent and well-illuminated cloud in the sky” “overshadowed them” which means “threw a shadow upon and enveloped”: “and behold” or “and lo and see” “a voice” or “a sound and tone of uttered words” “out of the cloud” which means “from the well-illuminated cloud in the sky”. Matthew shared how a “well-illuminated” “cloud” “enveloped” Jesus, Moses, Elijah, Peter, James and John”, and a “sound and tone of uttered words” was heard from out of it.
The verse goes on to say, “which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear you him.” Matthew continued with the words, “which said” or “the voice uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “This is my beloved Son” or “Jesus is God's esteemed, dear, favorite and worthy of love Son”, “in whom” or “with whom ” “I am well pleased” which means “God takes pleasure in, is favorably inclined to and chooses”; “hear you” which means “be endowed with the faculty of hearing, not deaf toward and considerate of” “him” which refers to “Jesus”. Matthew shared how God Himself interrupted Peter's statement and said that Jesus is His “well loved” and “chosen” Son with whom He took “pleasure”. God then declared how the disciples should “listen to and hearken” to Him.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how God involved Himself in this mountain top experience. Though Peter thought they should build “three tabernacles” there, God told he and the other disciples He was “pleased” with Jesus and they were to “hear” Him. God sent Jesus to “save people” from their sins, and when people listen to Him and believe, they shall not only be “saved” but inherit “everlasting life” with the One in whom God is “well pleased”.
Next time Matthew shares, “when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
