Let Us Make Three Tabernacles - Matthew 17:4

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him”, and in chapter seventeen and verse four of his book, Matthew shares how Peter said, “let us make here three tabernacles” where we read:

Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if you will, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

The verse reads, Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here:”. Matthew began with the words, “then answered” or “at that time and moment responded and proposed” “Peter” or “one of the disciples whose name means a rock or stone”, “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto Jesus” which refers to “to Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”, “Lord” or “he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “it is good” which means “it is beautiful, handsome, excellent, eminent, choice, surpassing, precious, useful, suitable, commendable and admirable” “for us” or “for Peter, James and John” “to be here” which means “to be upon the mountain”. Matthew shared how “Peter” could not contain himself at what he was seeing and told Jesus “it is good” for he and the other disciples to be with Him upon the mountain.

The verse continues, if you will, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. Matthew added the words, “if you will” which means “if Jesus would allow and permit it to be”, “let us” or “allow and permit Peter, James, John, Moses, Elijah and Jesus” “make here” or “prepare and produce” “three tabernacles” which refers to “three tents or habitations”; “one for you” which means “one tent for Jesus”, “and one” or “and one tent” “for Moses” which refers to “for Moses who represented the law” “and one” or “and one tent” “for Elias” which means “for Elijah who represents the prophets”. Matthew shared how Peter proposed they construct “three tents” for “Jesus, Moses and Elijah” to dwell in upon the mountain.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Peter impulsively responded to what he saw upon the mountain. First, Jesus was “transfigured” before he, James and John, then “Moses and Elijah” appear before them speaking to Jesus. This must have been a glorious sight, and Peter was so delighted with this scene he decided this was a place where all of them should dwell. God desires people to “live with Him forever”, and when they put their “faith and trust” in Jesus Christ, they are promised “everlasting life”. Those who are wise will not only observe Peter's words but aspire to be with Jesus, Moses and Elijah in heaven some day.

Next time Matthew shares how there was, a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear you him, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
