Matthew the apostle wrote about Jesus feeding four thousand men plus women and children, and afterward, “he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala. The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would show them a sign from heaven”, and in chapter sixteen and verse two of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus talked with the Pharisees and Sadducees about “fair weather” where we read:
He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, you say,
It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.
The verse reads, “He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, you say, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “He answered” which means “Jesus responded and began to speak” “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which means “to the Pharisees and Sadducees”, “when” or “at the time and moment” “it is evening” or “from six o'clock p.m. to the beginning of the night”, “you say” which means “the Pharisees and Sadducees declare, utter and proclaim”. Matthew shared how Jesus began to respond by referring to the “evening” time and what the “Pharisees and Sadducees” “say” about it.
The verse continues, “... It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.” Matthew added the words, “it will be fair weather” which means “there will be a serene and clear sky”: “for” which means “because, since and on account that” “the sky” or “the region where the clouds and the tempests gather and where thunder and lightning are produced” “is red” which means “has become glowing red”. Matthew shared how Jesus referred to the way the “Pharisees and Sadducees” forecast a “clear sky” when it was “red colored” in the evening time.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus began to answer the religious leaders by referring to the weather predictions they made by looking at the “evening sky”. God desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when He begins to respond to questions from those who are in doubt of Him, those who are wise will pay close attention to His words lest they find themselves among those who are in opposition to Him even if it concerns the “weather”.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus questioned the Pharisees and Sadducees about how they, “can discern the face of the sky; but can you not discern the signs of the times?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
