Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, “There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain apart”, and in chapter seventeen and verse two of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus, “was transfigured before them” where we read:
And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun,
and his raiment was white as the light.
The verse reads, “And was transfigured before them:”. Matthew began with the words, “and was transfigured” which is the Greek word “metamorphoō” from which we get out English word “metamorphosis” and describes how Jesus was “changed into another form or transformed” “before them” or “in the presence of the three disciples”. Matthew shared how Jesus was “transformed” in the presence of Peter, James and John.
The verse continues, “and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.” Matthew added the words, “and his face” which means “and Jesus' countenance” “did shine” or “was beaming and with radiate brilliancy” “as the sun” or “like the sun in the sky”, “and his raiment” or “and Jesus' clothing and outer garments” “was white” which means “were white in color” “as the light” or “like illumination from a lamp, star or torch”. Matthew shared how Jesus' “countenance” was illuminated before the disciples, and His “clothing” was “brilliant white and radiant”.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see a description of what happened with Jesus as He was upon the mountain. He was “changed into another form” in front of the disciples, and His face and clothing changed to brilliancy. Jesus appeared in His “heavenly body”, and the disciples were able to see Him as He will be in His heavenly Kingdom. God desires every person to be in a loving personal relationship with Him, and they gain access to His Kingdom through His Son Jesus. Let all who read these words consider the “transformed” manifestation of Jesus and yield their lives to the One who lives in His “transfigured” body to this day.
Next time Matthew shares how, “there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with” Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
