Matthew the apostle wrote, When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?And they said, Some say that you are John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets”, and in chapter sixteen and verse fifteen of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus asked His disciple, “whom say you that I am?” where we read:
He said unto them, But whom say you that I am?
The verse reads, “He said unto them, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “He said” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “unto them” or “to the disciples”. Matthew shared how Jesus began to respond to the disciples answer as to whom people say that He was.
The verse continues, “... But whom say you that I am?” Matthew added the word, “but” which means “nevertheless, moreover and” “whom say you” which means “what person do the disciples declare, utter and proclaim” “that I am” or “that Jesus is”? Matthew shared how Jesus asked His disciples “whom” they declared Him to be.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus desired to know who the disciples thought He was. Their answer was important to their own relationship with God, and whoever reads these words should also consider the same question, “whom say you” that Jesus “is”? The answer to that question will determine the eternal life of all who consider it, and those who are wise will know that Jesus Christ is the Messiah of the living God who came to die for the sins of the whole world.
Next time Matthew shares how, “Simon Peter answered and said, you are the Christ”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
