Luke the physician wrote how Peter spoke about Jesus to the multitude gathered outside the house where the upper room was located. Peter said, “Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain. Whom God has raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. For David spoke concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved. Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope. Because you will not leave my soul in hell, neither will you suffer your Holy One to see corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life; you shall make me full of joy with your countenance. Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulcher is with us unto this day”, and in chapter two and verse thirty of the book of Acts Luke shared how Peter told the multitude how King David knew God would, “raise up Christ to sit on his throne” where we read:
Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him,
that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
The verse begins, “Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, ...” Luke began with the words, “therefore being a prophet” which means “then, wherefore, consequently and on this account existing as one who was moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman who solemnly declared to men what he received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation”, “and knowing that God” or “and understanding, perceiving and discerning that the Heavenly Father God” “had sworn with an oath to him” which means “affirmed, promised, and invoked by using a pledge to him, King David” the following idea. Luke shared how “Peter” referred to “King David” being a “prophet” who “knew” how “God the Heavenly Father” “swore” to him by using a promise and pledge.
The verse goes on to say, “... that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;” Luke continued with the words, “that of the fruit” or “that the offspring, posterity and progeny” “of his loins” which means “belonging to his, King David's, procreative power”, “according to the flesh” or “down from, through out and toward soft substance of the living body which covers the bones and is permeated with blood”, “he would raise up Christ” which means “he, God the Father, was to lift and stand up the anointed One who is the Messiah and Son of God” “to sit on his throne” or “to be seated, appointed and fixed upon his, King David's, chair of state having a footstool”. Luke shared how “Peter” referred to “King David's” knowledge concerning the fact that God promised him his “offspring and posterity” in the flesh would be exalted and “seated” upon “David's” “throne”. (See 2 Samuel 7:11-16)
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how God promised King David that his “posterity” would be “seated” upon his “throne” of authority and rule. In other words, Jesus, like David, was to be the King of the Jews. Because God loves people, He sent His Son Jesus into the world through the lineage of King David as a member of the Jewish nation, Israel. Jesus was to die for the sins of every person and be raised from the dead three days later. This afforded the opportunity for anyone to surrender their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and when they yield to Him they will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words understand the role and position of Jesus who is not only the “King of the Jews”, but also the “King” of the world.
Next time Luke shares how Peter tells the multitude how King David, “spoke of the resurrection of Christ”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
