The Resurrection of Christ - Acts 2:31

The physician Luke wrote how Peter spoke to the multitude gathered outside the house where the upper room was located and said, “Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulcher is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne”, and in chapter two and verse thirty-one of the book of Acts Luke shared how Peter told the multitude how King David, “spoke of the resurrection of Christ” where we read:

He seeing this before spoke of the resurrection of Christ,

that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

The verse begins, “He seeing this before spoke of the resurrection of Christ, ... Luke began with the words, “he seeing this” which means “he, King David, observing, beholding and noticing the Messiah was to descend through his lineage” “before spoke of the resurrection of Christ” or “in advance and prior to this, uttered, declared and made proclamation concerning the raising from the dead pertaining to the anointed One, Messiah and Son of God”. Luke shared how “Peter” referred to how “King David” perceived in advance that Jesus would be “raised from the dead”.

The verse continues, “... that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.” Luke added the words, “that his soul” or “that his, the Messiah Jesus', heart or seat of the feelings, desires, affections and aversions” “was not left in hell” which means “did not remain or stay in Hades which is the nether world, the realm of the dead, the lower regions and grave”, “neither his flesh” or “no and not in any way did his, the Messiah Jesus', body or soft substance of the living body which covers the bones and is permeated with blood” “did see corruption” which means “perceived, observed, beheld or noticed destruction or decay”. Luke shared how “Peter” referred to “King David's” words about how the “Messiah Jesus'” physical body did not remain in “Hades” or the realm of the dead, and in no way did Jesus' body experience destruction and decay.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Peter” referred to “King David's” understanding about the resurrection of the Messiah Jesus Christ. Because “King David” had been given the prophetic word of God about the Messiah, he knew the Messiah would not remain in the realm of the dead. God resurrected Jesus from the dead three days after He died on the cross for the sins of the world. Jesus died so people may be forgiven of their sins, and He rose from the dead to grant everlasting life to everyone who believes and trusts in Him. God knows all things, and there is nothing that occurs that He does not know. Let all who carefully consider these words yield themselves to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Peter tells the multitude, “this Jesus has God raised up”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
